Hello San Miguel Neighbors,

Just a quick reminder that this Thurs. April 12th at Coco's is the annual Tip-a-Cop breakfast from 7:00am to 10:30am. Come by and have a Sunnyvale police officer serve you breakfast or pour you a cup of coffee. The tips and Coco's donations from this event go to support the special Olympics so come on by and join SMNA at one of their two reserved tables for a wonderful breakfast for a great cause.

Sunnyvale Cool Newsletter
March 29, 2012

Progress

Update of Sunnyvale's Green Building Code moves forward. Years in the making, Sunnyvale's citywide Green Building Ordinance went into effect in January 2010. (Also in January 2010, CALGreen, the first ever state green building code was implemented.) At the time of the adoption of the City ordinance the previous summer, regular updates of the code at eighteen month intervals were anticipated.

Last fall Council approved an update of the commercial portion of Sunnyvale's Green Building Ordinance. During the first part of this year Sunnyvale is considering the update of the residential and municipal building sections of the Green Building Ordinance. First staff held three outreach meetings to solicit input from residents and the business community. Next the Planning Commission and the Sustainability Commission held a joint study session on the topic. Most recently the staff recommendation was reviewed, discussed and evaluated by the Planning and Sustainability Commissions. The ordinance will ultimately go to Council, currently scheduled for the April 24 City Council meeting.

After study and consideration of public input, staff recommends that:

  • All new residential construction, regardless of square footage, achieve 80 Build It Green GreenPoints as a minimum and 110 points for incentives (up from 70 and 100 GreenPoints, respectively);
  • New residential construction be verified by a certified GreenPoint rater;
  • New residential projects receive three GreenPoints for installation of electric car charging units at 3% of parking spaces;
  • Major alterations (over $100,000 for single family residential and over $250,000 for multi-family residential) include applicable CALGreen items (CALGreen currently applies only to new construction.);
  • New public facilities over 5,000 square feet meet LEED Silver requirements and consider LEED Gold;
  • Public building alteration standards remain the same;
The update go into effect on October 1, 2012.

Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance. Also years in the making is the Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance, approved by Council late last year. The Ordinance goes into effect in two stages. Beginning June 20, 2012; groceries, convenience and liquor stores, large drug stores and other large retail stores will no longer be allowed to provide plastic single-use plastic carryout bags at checkout. Retailers may provide customers with paper bags made with at least 40% post-consumer recycled content and reusable bags specifically designed for multiple uses, as defined in the ordinance. Stores must collect a mandatory 10 cent charge from the customer for each paper carryout bag. (Plastic "product" bags for produce, meat, greeting cards, etc. are not affected.) The Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance will extend to the remaining Sunnyvale retailers on March 20, 2013. More information: Bringyourbags.inSunnyvale.com

Staff is leading an extensive outreach campaign to inform the community about the new ordinance before it takes effect. How can you help? To schedule a presentation to your group or to volunteer to help with outreach, please contact
kcooke@ci.sunnyvale.ca.us

Safe Routes to School. The Cupertino Union School District gave the go-ahead two weeks ago for the grant-funded Safe Routes to School program to set up projects in the four District schools in Sunnyvale next fall. This means that all Sunnyvale public elementary and middle schools are now included in the two-year program. (Safe Routes to School already had the strong support of the Sunnyvale Elementary School District and the Santa Clara School District.)

Those Sunnyvale schools included in the first year of the two-year program are already benefiting from pedestrian and bike safety events, such as assemblies and bike rodeos; parent training; and infrastructure improvements around the school.  The other half of Sunnyvale’s K-8 schools will follow next year.

The Safe Routes to School program brings the County Public Health Department, the Sunnyvale Public Works and Public Safety Departments, and the school districts together to work in an organized way to improve the safety and health of our students.

The next session of SNAP, Sunnyvale Neighborhoods Actively Prepare, starts April 5.  See:http://sunnyvale.ca.gov/Departments/PublicSafety/EmergencyPreparedness.aspx.  If you miss any session you can make it up next time so don’t hesitate to sign up.  I have taken SNAP training and consider it invaluable.  It’s not a question, if an earthquake is going to happen in Sunnyvale, but when! If you watched what happened in New Orleans and Haiti, then you can see how important it is to be prepared.  You will not be able to climb over millions of other people to get out of Sunnyvale.  You had better be prepared to stay in Sunnyvale on your own for 3 to 7 days.  Are you ready?
The following is very pertinent to SNAP and Disaster Preparedness in Sunnyvale.  I lifted it from State Senator Elaine Alquist’s recent newsletter.  Check out the links:
Senator Elaine Kontominas Alquist California District 13 Representing the Heart of Silicon Valley
image001
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: TOTALLY UNPREPARED CAMPAIGN image001
A 2008 study found that not nearly enough California residents are prepared for the next big earthquake. In response, three California agencies—the Seismic Safety Commission which I serve on, California Emergency Management Agency, and California Earthquake Authority—decided to try something completely different in 2011 to deal with this problem. The result was the Totally Unprepared Campaign:  http://www.totallyunprepared.com/

Instead of preparedness being something we only think about once a year, Totally Unprepared maintains a year round editorial schedule that engages readers with video contests, interviews with earthquake survivors, and 20 webisodes of original content offering the preparedness message in a fun and easy-to-understand format.
Totally Unprepared tries to do things a little differently than a typical earthquake preparedness campaign. Why tell people what can happen during an earthquake when showing them works so much better? Ever wonder how a wine rack responds to an earthquake? Or bookcases? An aquarium? Framed photos? Check out the website and see how you can be better prepared when an earthquake does strike.
Click here as their Get Ready Quick,  http://www.totallyunprepared.com/get-ready-quick/,  links can help you survive an earthquake, or any other type of disaster.

If you would like to make a difference in the life of a child with a relatively small time commitment, San Miguel School in Sunnyvale has a great opportunity.  They are looking for volunteers to read to children who are reading below grade-level.   The program is called "Reading Partners" and is a successful model that is new to Sunnyvale.  Please read below for more details and contact information if you are able to participate and help a child in our community.

Thank you for your consideration,
Reid Myers
Reidsmail@yahoo.com
************************************************************
one tutor. one child. infinite possibilities.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, almost 90% of children in low-income households are reading below grade level. Reading Partners is a literacy intervention nonprofit that works to give students the reading skills and confidence they need to thrive in the classroom and unlock the opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty.

While Reading Partners has been in the Bay Area since 1999, this is our first year serving the city of Sunnyvale.  Our Reading Center is based out of San Miguel Elementary School, located at 777 San Miguel Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA.  We currently have 58 enrolled students at San Miguel, and with your support we will be able to impact the lives of even more young readers.

We ask volunteers to commit to 45 minutes once per week to work with an elementary school student who is reading below grade level to improve their phonics and comprehension skills. All tutoring sessions are done one-on-one with a structured curriculum and the guidance of an on site staff member. No previous experience is needed and Reading Partners provides all training. On average, our students advance one grade level in reading for every 26 hours of tutoring they receive.

If you are interested in learning more, feel free to visit the Reading Partners website at: http://readingpartners.org/volunteer or contact our Outreach Coordinator Laura Burns at lburns@readingpartners.org or 408 834 9892.

will occupy the new 156,000 square-foot Town Center Office building at Mathilda and
McKinley avenues.

“This is an important step forward,” said Luebbers. Our entire community will benefit as
we see yet another large gain in the Town Center redevelopment project.”
Just a year ago, Nokia merged several of their Bay Area offices into a new regional
office. They selected a new office building on Mathilda and Washington avenues, next
door to what will now become Apple’s building. Nokia brought in some 500 employees
to staff their Town Center site, and Apple is expected to add 400 or so of their own.
“The gain in the daytime business presence of several hundred more people will provide
a boost to the City’s economy,” Luebbers added. “They will inject more business into
downtown and Murphy Avenue restaurants and shops.”

While the Sunnyvale Town Center redevelopment project has run into challenges as a
result of the economic downturn, the continued operation of Macy’s, the addition of
new Target store two years ago, the 2010 leasing of an entire 156,000 square-foot
office building and today’s announcement that Apple will occupy the second office
building are all signs of gaining forward momentum in the completion of the center.

Luebbers said he expects Apple will occupy the new office space in approximately the
third quarter of 2012. “When it comes to our Town Center redevelopment, this is not the
last of the good news we will be sharing.”

My name is Tracy Hern and I am the Crime Prevention Unit supervisor for the City of Sunnyvale, Department of Public Safety.  I am writing to everyone to address an email string that is circulating throughout many Neighborhood Associations in Sunnyvale.

On Friday January 20, 2012 at approximately 10:30 pm a home invasion style robbery occurred in Sunnyvale.  This robbery occurred in the Ponderosa Park area.  No one was physically injured during this incident.  The robbery began with a knock on the door of the residence and an unknown male accusing the home owners of providing drugs to a family member.  This was simply a rouse to get the occupant to open the door.  The occupant subsequently closed and locked the door, but the suspect forced entry by kicking the door.  Once inside the suspect stole a laptop and made verbal threats to the occupants prior to leaving.  The suspect was not armed and no weapon was mentioned or seen.  A second subject was present, but never made entry into the house.  This subject was arrested a short distance from the scene.

The primary suspect in this case is still outstanding, but our Robbery Detectives have solid leads they are investigating.

I would like to remind homeowners to keep doors and windows locked at all times.  Although this may not completely stop an intruder from entering your home, it will definitely deter some of their actions.  Also, be mindful of unknown visitors to your home.  If someone comes to your door that you do not know, do not open it.  Use the peep hole or window to let them know you are home and tell them you are not expecting anyone and ask them to leave.  If the person engages you verbally tell them that you are calling the police and then dial “911” to report the suspicious person.  Do not simply ignore them.  This may give the person the idea that no one is home and they may try to burglarize this home.

There are rumors that this incident is just one of “several other occurrences” with the same ploy.  I would like to reassure you that this was an isolated incident.  Crime does occur in Sunnyvale, but home invasion style robberies are rare.  There have only been three reported cases in the last year and they were months apart from each other and in completely different areas of the City.  Sunnyvale is a safe community and it is because our community members, like you, report suspicious activity when it is occurring.  The Department of Public Safety has a strong connection with our community and we all benefit from our partnership with the Neighborhood Associations.

Thank you for your continued support.

Hello,

The attached minutes from the quarterly Neighborhood Association meeting were put together by a variety of people who took notes at the meeting. It was truly a group effort! They are written from the perspective that they can be read by those present at the meeting, and can also be forwarded along to the individual members of the neighborhood associations if a leader decides to do so (and we hope that they do!).

Thanks to all,

Michelle

Hi, Everyone,

This Study Issue Survey is one that City Council member Jim Griffith does annually to get input from the neighborhoods--He shares the final data with the rest of the City Council members (not your info).  City Council will be ranking, rating, deferring and deleting study issues on February 3.

A study issue is an issue that is researched prior to council deciding whether it will become policy or not.  Your input will help the council understand where the residents stand.  These are tactical issues that require budget, so your participation can help shape the future of our neighborhood and of Sunnyvale, and let us all know where you want money spent.

Subject: Intruder alert

Hello, Neighbors,

We just had another intruder last night who tried to get into a home on Amador and San Pablo.  He drove a light colored medium-sized car with a "spoiler" on the back, appeared to be of average height and around 30 years old.  He tried to the doors and went into the back yard, and was scared away by the owner.

With the economy so difficult for some, and the holidays here, please remember to keep your homes and cars locked.  AND call 911 if you have anyone unknown around your home at night!

Subject: Watch Out! Car thieves in neighborhood

Hi, Everyone,

On Monday,  Nov 14, one of our neighbors off Amador close to the school had their car broken into.  Their alarm went off, thieves were not caught...Our neighbors wanted to make sure you knew about this!  So make sure to clear your car of valuables, and remember to lock your car!  No one needs to have these challenges during the holidays or at any time.

Press Release: Attempted kidnapping in Los Gatos this past weekend.

http://losgatos.patch.com/articles/police-man-tries-to-kidnap-girl-on-lark-ave

Press Release
11/14/11 10:45 AM
Scott R. Seaman, Chief of Police Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department
Los Gatos/Monte Sereno police investigate an attempted kidnapping of a 17
year old girl, on Lark Ave near the Los Gatos Creek Trail in Los Gatos.
At about 4:17 PM, Sunday, November 13, 2011, a 17 year old girl was
walking west-bound on Lark Ave on the north side of the street from the Los Gatos
Creek Trail when a vehicle slowed next to her, and the driver, a male in
his mid-forties offered to give her a ride. When she declined, he stopped his
car on the north curb ahead of her, exited the vehicle and opened the
passenger door. The suspect approached the victim on foot, grabbed her arm and
bent down as if trying to lift her. She pulled from his grasp, punching the
suspect in the face and kneeing him in the groin, which caused him to
double over in pain. The suspect released his grip of the victim, returned to
his vehicle and drove away west-bound on Lark toward Winchester.
The victim described the suspect as a Hispanic male, approximately 45
years of age, 5'6" tall, 150 lbs, clean-shaven, with black, slicked-back medium
length hair. He was wearing a red t-shirt with a large circular logo on
the front, and dirty blue jeans with paint splatters on them. She said he had
no discernible accent, and she did not see any noticeable scars, marks or
tattoos.
The suspect vehicle was described as a small sedan, hatchback, or station
wagon, possibly a mid-eighties VW Jetta, or similar-looking vehicle. The
noteworthy characteristic of the vehicle was that it was dark brown in color
and had several large areas that were painted dark blue or black, as if the
vehicle was rusting and the dark paint was used to cover those areas. The
victim said that the vehicle had tinted rear passenger windows and a manual
transmission.
An alert flyer was distributed to all Santa Clara County law enforcement
agencies and this press release will be disseminated to Los Gatos and Monte
Sereno schools. Los Gatos/Monte Sereno police detectives are actively
investigating this incident. Anyone with information about this crime, or knows
of a person or vehicle matching that of the suspect description provided,
should contact Detective Kevin Elliott, at
408 827-3211.
For questions about this press release, please contact Sergeant Kerry
Harris at
408 354-6843.

Older Adult Summit

I think we all have at least a special senior in our lives: A family member, a friend, a neighbor, a member of our faith group or someone who lives up the street. Well you probably know that funding for senior needs – housing, food, medical and behavioral health services, etc – are being proposed for cut at every level of government. For the past two years, I have served on the Mental Health Board and was particularly disturbed by the challenges members of the older adult community face in getting mental health services. This is very dangerous – we cannot ignore the needs of our aging family members, friends and neighbors!

I would like to invite you to join me at the Older Adult Summit on June 1, 2011. This FREE event will be held from 8:30am to 4:00pm at the San Jose Airport Garden Hotel. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided for FREE. This important event is being organized by my office along with the Mental Health Department and the Mental Health Board. This event will bring together service providers, older adults, and families or friends of older adults to talk about the mental health needs of seniors in Santa Clara County. We need to figure out what things prevent people from reaching these services (such as transportation problems, need care for grandchildren, don’t know about services available, etc.). We are going to use the information that we learn to develop a plan to improve the mental health care and support throughout the community. Given the current budget crunches we are seeing at all levels of government, it is important to make sure that there the holes in our services are filled so that we are making the best use of our money and that no one slips through the cracks. For more information or to register to attend the summit, please visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OA_Summit_2011408-885-5770

Sincerely,

Dave

Information from Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety

Hello Sunnyvale Neighborhood Association Leaders:

Do you know how to get emergency warnings sent to your cell phone, mobile device, email, or landline? Do you know where to tune on your AM radio to hear specific information about an event of importance in Sunnyvale?

Two resources are available to you as a Sunnyvale resident.

AlertSCC – Santa Clara County’s Emergency Alert Notification System

The City of Sunnyvale participates with other Cities in Santa Clara County in the confidential and free AlertSCC notification service. This service provides users with information and instructions in the time of an emergency on situations such as

  • Flooding, wildfires and subsequent evacuations
  • Public safety incidents, including crimes that immediately affect your neighborhood
  • Post-disaster information about shelters, transportation, or supplies
This notification resource helps to supplement the other sources of information such as radio and television. Alerts are sent to any number of devices, e-mail addresses or landlines that you register. Your personal information is kept confidential by the County and not shared with any private company.

Please sign up today by going to the AlertSCC website

http://www.alertscc.com/index.html

Alert 1680 AM – Sunnyvale’s Emergency Radio Station

There is a new radio station on the AM dial here in Sunnyvale, but you won’t be able to hear your favorite top-40 song on this station. Instead, you will hear important safety information during local, regional or national emergencies. Alert 1680 is now in operation at 1680 AM on your radio dial. This radio station is the brainchild of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety’s Office of Emergency Services and the Sunnyvale Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Funding for the system was made possible through a grant provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Alert 1680 will broadcast weather information provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 24-hours a day. If important information needs to be broadcast to the residents in the community, Public Safety staff can quickly access the radio system and either broadcast live or schedule pre-recorded information segments.

You will soon see signs around the community designed to heighten awareness to Alert 1680 AM. Alert 1680 is part of the City’s overall public notification system during emergencies, which includes Alert 1680, the news media, the City’s Web site, cable television and the County’s SCCAlert notification system.

I encourage you to sign up for AlertSCC as well as to set your AM Radio preset to 1680 AM. Both of these resources will be important sources of information for you in time of an emergency.

Steve Drewniany, Deputy Chief
Bureau of Special Operations
Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety

SMNA’s 2011 April Yard Sale

The SMNA’s yard sale was a success. We had a steady flow of yard sale buyers come and go throughout the day. Here are some pictures from the event.

We want to thank the Armenian Gourmet Restaurant at 929 E Duane Ave for letting us use their parking lot for the sale. We would also like to thank all of those neighbors that donated yard sale items and a extra thanks to those that volunteered their time to help setup, sell, deliver and pack items at the event.
