SMNA Events

April 6th, 2009 by Tara

Hello, SMNA Neighbors,

We are collecting for our Rummage Sale on April 25, in the parking lot of the shopping center on Duane. If you or your neighbors have things you would like to donate for re-use, please contact Tara at 408-733-5778 for pick-up or small items and scheduling of larger items.

Come to the meeting at PIZZA DEPOT on April 13 to hear Dir. Santos of the Santa Clara Valley Water District. We will also be collecting spare change for the “Penny Drive” to benefit our School.

The annual Tip-A-Cop event will be at CoCo’s restaurant on Thursday, April 23, 2009, from
7-10:30 am. SMNA always has a table for people who want to attend. Come on down! It’s fun and supports the Special Olympics.

Friday, May 22nd, at 5:00 pm is the deadline for the Neighborhood Grant Applications. We have submitted grants for the last 2 years to add prizes and entertainment to our large events–what events would you like support that create community in SMNA?

Dumpster Day is coming in June, if you need to clean up large items at your home! Watch for it!

Low Cost CFLs

March 16th, 2009 by Tara

If you have a Safeway club card, you can buy 4-packs of CFLs for 99 cents now through March 29. They are 23-watt FEIT ECObulbs, which provide the same light as 100-watt incandescent bulbs.

25 cents per bulb is the lowest price I’ve ever seen. Three years ago CFLs cost $1.99 and the payback period for a CFL was 60 days. Now that PG&E’s mid-tier price is up to $.26/kwh and the price of bulbs has dropped, the payback period is now only 6 days! That means that if you use a bulb 2 hours per night, in only six nights your electricity savings will equal what you paid for the bulb. Amazing!!

The Safeway I shop at (Miramonte and Cuesta in Mtn. View) had no signs saying there were any limits on the # of bulbs you could buy. I recommend buying enough for your own needs and for any family members who haven’t made the switch. If you own rental property, now is the time to get CFLs for it. If you just feel like taking advantage of this great deal you can also buy a couple of cases (it’s only $6/case!) and donate them to Acterra for use in their Green @ Home program. Acterra is located at 3921 East Bayhore Road in Palo Alto. They can use them for the free residential energy audits they provide in Redwood City, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale. See http://www.acterra.org/programs/ index.html for more about Green @ Home and other Acterra programs.

FREMONT John Laing Homes, a stalwart of residential construction in California with roots that date back to England of the mid-19th century, said Thursday it is attempting to cope with a cash squeeze and has launched a restructuring that includes job cuts.

The developer has halted construction at several Northern California projects, including a number in the Bay Area, contractors said. Residents who have moved into the homebuilder’s unfinished developments say they are worried about the ominous implications of John Laing’s construction shutdown.

John Laing developments include projects in San Ramon, Fremont, Vallejo, Sunnyvale and the Sacramento area.

John Laing Homes, one of the largest privately held home builders in the United States, is currently reviewing all potential options to meet its capital requirements,€ the Irvine-based company said in an e-mail release to this newspaper.
